khichdi recipe has always been India’s superfood or queen of all foods and perhaps the most common food in every Indian household. Being so common adds versatility and variation to this delicacy which changes with each region. Generally, we make this recipe when someone is ill, according to our mentality. But Khichdi is one of the lightest food dishes which can be consumed anytime, not only when you’re ill.

Normal Khichdi is made with Rice and Dal (pulses) of your choice, There are different types of ways to cook this recipe. But today I bought a different way of this recipe and you can use it with fresh or leftover khichdi. Masala Hoch Poch, the word “Hoch Poch” is traditionally a Gujarati word that was used in previous times. In another word, It is the name of masala khichdi from ancient times.

So to make this recipe, You need the Ingredients mentioned below. Along with that, you can use different vegetables like Peas, carrots, potatoes, Bottle-gourd, etc. According to your choice and if you’re Jain, You can replace the vegetables with Peas, beans, Bottle-gaurd, etc. according to your choice. Enjoy Masala Hoch Poch as breakfast, snack or dinner as well.

With the following ingredients, one can make Masala Hoch Poch for about 3-4 people.  

List of ingredients :

  • 2 cups cooked khichdi
  • 1/2 cup finely chopped onions
  • 1/2 cup finely chopped tomatoes
  • 1/4 tbsp carrom seeds (Ajwain)
  • 1/4 tbsp asafoetida (Hing)
  • 6-8 curry leaves
  • 1/2 tbsp red chilli powder
  • 1/2 tbsp coriander powder
  • 1/4 tbsp turmeric powder
  • Salt to taste
  • Freshly chopped coriander


To make masala Hoch Poch, take a frying pan, add 2 tbsp oil to it as soon as it gets hot enough add 1/4 tbsp carrom seeds (Ajwain), 1/4 tbsp asafoetida (Hing), 6-8 curry leaves (You can also add 1 tbsp chopped green chillies or paste for more spicy flavour, it is optional) and mix it well. After that add 1/2 cup chopped onions (Before onions you can add ginger-garlic paste, it is optional) mix it well, and allow it to cook for 1-2 minutes. Next, add 1/2 cup of chopped tomatoes mix it well and again cook it for 1-2 minutes. Next step, add 1/2 tbsp red chilli powder, 1/2 tbsp coriander powder, 1/4 turmeric powder, and salt to taste and give a quick mix. Then, add 2 cups cooked khichdi and mix all together well. The last step is to add 1/4 tbsp water for lumps free and to maintain consistency, add 1 tbsp oil or ghee or butter and mix it well. At last, Garnish it with freshly chopped coriander ( You can also green onions or chopped onions or tomatoes for garnish as per your choice).
